I’m new to DataSnipper and looking for ideas on how it can help with tax services either during prep or review.

What are ways you have used it and seen improvements in efficiencies?

What were some of the pitfalls you have dealt with when first starting to use the software?

What would you recommend to a new user to alleviate pain points when using it with tax services in mind?

All good questions… I am a tax professional but I do work with tax professionals and to me, tax is one of the areas where I think DataSnipper could be most useful, especially because in tax, you’re often working with standardized forms and whatnot (clearly, that is not always the case as it depends if you’re working on personal income taxes or corporate taxes)… but per your questions:

What are ways you have used it and seen improvements in efficiencies?

  • Form extraction is probably the main feature that would be most useful - i.e., uploading the same templatized form and being able to extract data from the same templatized form in seconds is pretty powerful. Outside of that, just the overall replacement of having to do manually entry is an efficiency.

What were some of the pitfalls you have dealt with when first starting to use the software?

  • To me, this is dependent on the forms that you’re uploading… I used form extraction on some payroll forms that might have a slight variation in its template, and if that is the case, form extraction is not going to work for you (though, all other features would).

What would you recommend to a new user to alleviate pain points when using it with tax services in mind?

  • The pain points are going to be minimal. The learning curve isn’t exactly steep. For me, the challenge is likely from the reviewer standpoint and getting a reviewer comfortable with the fact that the support evidence in your tax workpaper is imbedded in the file itself.

Thank you andygoehl for your responses.  I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

for Tax purposes

I am using few features, i am open to learning more from the inputs from other community members

Features i am using are

Extracting bank statements-pdf and sort them based on description / narration and creating WTB based on the sorted information.

Another one is, if you get W2 report / forms, where in there are many employees, you can extract all information like Net Pay, Fed Withholding, State W/h Payroll Taxes, etc.  and tally it with Payroll wages versus payments cleared though banks. (Sometimes the employee is also paid other reimbursements and compensation which are not part of salary)
